Facebook on Monday said it is providing anonymous data about users' movements and relationships to help researchers better anticipate where the coronavirus might spread.
월요일 페이스북은 연구진이 코로나바이러스가 어디로 퍼질지 더 잘 예측할 수 있도록 사용자들의 움직임과 연관성에 대한 익명의 데이터를 제공하고 있다고 밝혔다.
The leading online social network is augmenting maps on "population movement" to glean insights in ways that still protect people's privacy, according to a post by Facebook head of health KX Jin and Laura McGorman of its Data for Good arm.
페이스북 보건팀장 KX진과 데이터포굳암의 로라 맥고먼이 올린 글에 따르면, 페이스북은 사람들의 사생활을 보호하면서도 바이러스에 대한 통찰을 얻고자 ‘인구 이동'에 대한 지도를 강화하고 있다.
"Hospitals are working to get the right resources, and public health systems are looking to put the right guidelines in place," Jin and McGorman said. "To do that, they need better information on whether preventive measures are working and how the virus may spread."
진과 맥고먼은 "병원들은 적절한 자원을 얻기 위해 노력 중이며, 공중 보건 시스템은 올바른 지침을 마련하려고 노력하고 있다"라며 "그러기 위해서는 예방 조치가 효과가 있는지, 바이러스가 어떻게 퍼질 수 있는지에 대한 더 나은 정보가 필요하다"고 설명했다.


Google last week announced a similar move, saying it would provide a snapshot of users' location data around the world to help governments gauge the effectiveness of social distancing measures, implemented to stem the COVID-19 pandemic.

구글은 지난주 코로나19의 대유행을 막기 위해 시행된 ‘사회적 거리 두기' 조치의 효과를 정부가 가늠할 수 있도록 전 세계 사용자 위치 데이터의 스냅샷을 제공하겠다고 밝히며 페이스북과 유사한 조치를 발표한 바 있다.


Tools that Facebook is providing for researchers include "co-location maps" to show probabilities of people in one specific place coming into contact with those in another, perhaps signaling where new COVID-19 cases might appear.

페이스북이 연구진에 제공하고 있는 도구에는 특정 장소의 사람들이 다른 장소의 사람들과 접촉할 확률을 보여주는 ‘공동 위치 지도'가 포함되어 있는데, 이는 새로운 코로나19 사례가 어디에서 발생할 수 있는지를 알릴 수 있다.
